The idea to make this sweet little brush holder came to me the other day. I am always happy to try new sewing ideas to use up any leftover fabric. I love cotton of all kinds and linen for it’s stunning texture and great properties. Our signature Evangeline dress made of high-quality linen is one of our consistently top selling pieces so there always fabric scraps left behind. They are ideal for embroidery, sewing practice, making handmade gifts or to use for just sitting down, having a cup of coffee and enjoying some quiet while slow stitching.
Creating unique home decor pieces and wearable art is my joy. Recently I made a still life and calm nature inspired large textile wall hanging piece with elements of acrylic painting. I love to create anything that captivates attention and entertains, as well as brings a soothing feeling that only a handmade piece can give. One of these was also the fabric cloth book, what a fun craft project! I used my favoirite embroidery and stitching techniques to decorate each page.
There is always some more to create!
This time, let’s try making a lovely brush holder! We will recycle fabric scraps and make this practical piece which can easily make a thoughtful and creative gift too!
If you are or know an artist, you will love the holder for every time you’re on the go! You can easily pack your artistic essentials, to capture ideas and inspiration wherever you are! But the brush holder is not great just for artists! You can use it for make-up brushes too! I’ve also loved it for my embroidery tools. What a nice and neat way to organize the most important bits and pieces, so you can enjoy favourite crafts on your travels! Have your brushes always with you, like tools of excited archeologist going to make new discoveries. Like a precious journal wrapped with velvet ribbon.

You’ll need:
- Free downloadable pattern – piece A, piece B and piece C
- fabric scraps of your choice (roughly 4 x A4 size piece + the seam allowance)
- 10cm of a band
- scissors, sewing thread, pins, sewing machine
- For the decoration:
- embroidery floss of your choice
- blunt embroidery needle
Instructions:
Cut out all pieces as per the PDF pattern. The piece A is the foundation of the holder, piece creates the pockets inside so make sure to mark the line guides to help you define where to sew. The piece C is the inside piece to flip over the brushes to prevent them from falling out. This piece is to be cut out twice but it is optional. The purpose of the double C piece is to cover and make the back of your embroidery look nice and neat. However, you may want to skip this part if you like to leave the embroidery as it is or if you decide not to embroider the C piece at all.
Firstly, hem the upper edge of piece B. Then place the pieces A and B on top of each other, right sides in. At this point, make sure to insert the piece of band in the side of the pieces, loop facing inwards. Make sure the loop is not too small or to loose and strong enough to ‘hug’ the holder once finished and filled. The alternative you can use is two 10cm pieces (or one 20cm) to form a tie instead.
Sew around the edges to attach the pieces together. Turn them inside out and stitch again around the edges for nice and neat seam finish. Now create the inside pockets by following the line guides on piece B. Your fabric brush holder is nearly finished!
Embroider the piece C and hem three edges of the piece. Skip one of the long sides where the C piece will be attached to the rest of the fabric brush holder. You can also leave the piece minimalistic or use textile paints to paint the top of the flip-over. Remember to fix the paint by ironing it over a baking paper for 3-5 minutes.
Take the nearly finished piece and place it on top of the decorated C piece. Use simple stitch to attach the pieces by the top long edge. Flip the C piece to the front, over the pockets, and stitch the seam again for nice finish. And you’re done!
Looking after the fabric brush holder
The beautiful thing about this brush holder is that you can easily wash the fabric on a regular cycle. Whether you decide to use it for paint brushes, chalk and wax pencils, make-up or hair tools, it is likely to get dirty. I have chose the linen not only because it is my favourite textile but also because it is durable and doesn’t loose shape. You can wash the fabric brush holder at 30 degrees, hang to dry and iron at mild temperature.
