You’ll need:
- air dry clay
- an old glass jar
- rolling pin (or alternative)
- a small knife to cut the shape
- a skewer
- soon-to-bloom spring branches
Instructions
To make this beautiful spring flower decoration, cut away a small piece of air dry clay from the block and roll it flat. You can use a wooden rolling pin but the clay isn’t food friendly so you may want to use an alternative. I used an old paper tube left over from the kitchen paper towels. You can also use an old bottle, it will work just fine!
The flat ‘pancake’ should be approximately quarter of an inch thick. Take your old glass jar and turn it upside down. Place it on top of the pancake and trace the circle leaving approx 1cm allowance. This is to make sure that the edges can nicely lean over the top of the jar later.
Remove the jar and the leftover clay. Pat the edges gently to smooth them and make several holes with the skewer. They should be small enough so you can make several of them, and large enough to fit the branch stem.
Take the lid and carefully place it on top of the jar. Press it gently with your palm to create more of a ‘plate upside down’ shape so that the lid doesn’t fall off easily. Leave it like this to dry for several hours.
Once the clay is dry, you can either leave it as it is or embellish it by painting, spraying with metal paint or even use a clay varnish! And you’re ready to pop the branches in!
