Valentines Day Love Bird

Including a pom pom making template!

Valentine’s Day is nearly here and so is a perfect craft - precious love bird carrying a message! Tell your dear ones how special they are and how much they mean to you. Pom pom love bird is so easy to make and it looks reeeally cute! You can make in many colors but my favourite are usualy natural and neutral shades. Although since I was making a Valentine’s Day bird, I added some soft pink. All you need to do is find some suitable yarn, print our template and you can start creating! You may also like the other technique of making yarn birds that I tried last spring!

Turning thd pom pom into a bird

Initially you may feel that the body pom pom is quite large. This is because a pom pom by itself will not look like a bird even with a smaller one attached for the head. You need to cut the large pom pom into the right shape with sharp scissors. Think about it already as you wrap the yarn around the template. The hole in the middle should nearly be filled, with a good inch thick layer on each side. If you don’t add enough yarn, the pom pom will be floppy. Equally, if it’s too much you will struggle to make an opening to attach the head.

Valentine’s Day Love Bird

You’ll need:

  • printable pom pom making template
  • cutting mat
  • yarn in three shades
  • glue gun
  • mini wooden clothes pegs for craft (mini clothespins)
  • a piece of paper for your loving message
  • a couple of whole peppers for the eyes
  • scissors

Instructions

Firstly, print out the template and trace the shapes onto an old cardboard. Cut the pieces out using a cutting mat. You will need to cut out two for each size, four in total. Choose the yarn and begin wrapping it around the “C” shape through the small opening as shown. Continue until the middle hole is nearly filled. Then you need to cut the yarn all around the outter edge. After you’ve cut the yarn, secure the individual strands by putting a tie in the middle, in-between the cardboard templates. Tie a knot and remove the cardboard. You will have a noce pom pom which you can cut into the shape of a bird. The body should be longer, bulky on one side and narrowing into a tail on the other. The bottom should be flat so the bird can stand nicely.

Completing the bird

After you’ve made the body, use the smaller template to make the head. The technique is the same. Attach the head to the body by opening the yarn and adding a bit of glue. The head shape should be perfect as it is but if not, cut it into more suitable shape. The last step is to add eyes and the beak. Whole spice seeds make great eyes and you can create the lighg in them with some tippex correction fluid. The beak is a small wooden peg - both glued onto the head. Remember that glue the peg with the opening side away from the bird. Otherwise it won’t be able to hold your beautiful message!

Arrange the love bird onto a bedside table, let him sit by the breakfast, dinner or on the edge of a filled bath tub. You can even wrap it inside a box as a present!

I've always dreamed of working with textiles. There is such long known skill in sewing and stitching, one that gets passed on and takes you 150 years back to when one garment already meant a fortune. Made by hand, with all the imperfection and uniqueness of art that come with it.
