DIY FABRIC PIE CARRIER
DIY Fabric Pie Carrier
Practical and fun to make carrier to go with the pie!
DIY fabric pie carrier is such lovely project to make! So many times I’ve found myself looking for something to carry food in when visiting a friend. My mum is also always carrying food back and forth when entertaining guests or when having a meal in the garden which is quite a walk away from the kitchen. So I decided to make her this amazing fabric DIY pie carrier so she can not only carry the food easily but also make it look lovely for her friends!
It is lovely to bring something nice and homemade when you’re visiting someone. You can easily turn the carrier a lovely wrapping, make it part of whatever delicious food you have brought. The carrier is suitable not only for pies but also entire casserole dishes and so much more! Try the homemade bread or homemade carrot cake – both will go beautifully with the DIY pie carrier!
Affordable & easy to make!
The fabric pie carrier is really easy to make so it’s a wonderful practice for sewing beginners! Whether you’re learning to sew or you are an advanced sewist, you’re likely to enjoy this project. You can try a variety of patterns and make use of fabric scaps which would otherwise be thrown away. You can also use old bedding sheets or XL men’s shirts if you don’t want to invest too much in new fabrics. Old men’s shirts usually have a very decent piece of fabric at the back! I love to use them because I believe in recycling clothes that have already been made, and I also love the materials used for men’s shirts. I’ve recently made very comfy and lovely-looking DIY shirt dress out of three old men’s shirts, you can try it too! It’s ideal for morning works in the garden, noon painting and slow stitching or an evening walk.
Today, however I’ll be using beautiful designs of new fabrics I’ve recently purchased. I was making double layer cotton face masks to donate to local hospitals, nurseries and the post office so I have some of the fabric left. It’s in three designs so perfect for the three parts of the DIY fabric pie carrier. You can easily find similar fabric designs on cotton quilting squares and you can play with them by stitching different squates together to get the perfect square for the pie carrier!

DIY Fabric Pie Carrier
You’ll need:
- two cotton fabric squares measuring 70 x 70 cm in two different designs – some great options HERE
- two 75 x 5 cm pieces for the diagonal fabric strap
- two 15 x 5 cm pieces for the corner loops
- insulation fabric square measuring 70 x 70 cm
- scissors
- ruler and soft pencil
- pins
- basic sewing thread
- sewing machine
Instructions
Making the fabric square
Firstly, cut out three fabric squares measuring 70 x 70 cm – one from one cotton fabric design, second with a different fabric design and third out of the insulation fabric which will be inbetween the two cotton fabrics. The insulation layer will give the pie carrier better body and will also help you create nice quilted design.
Put the two cotton fabric squares right sides facing each other and align the edges. Then place both squares on top of the insulation fabric square and pin all three layers together around the edges.
Sew around approximately one inch from the edge and leave small 10 cm opening on one side of the square. The opening will allow you to turn the design inside out. Do so after trimming off the corner edges. Once it’s done and the right sides of the fabric square are now showing, iron the square including the opening and top stitch all the way around. Again, make sure the opening is closed nicely and the top stitch forms a neat edge.
If you prefer a quilted design, you can now stitch across the square in equal distances, from one side to the other. I am not a quilting expert so I don’t usually attempt any difficult designs. I simply top stitched across the square in different directions but you can also pre-sketch some interesting motif and machine stitch using free motion quilting foot and even a ruler.
Attaching the straps
When the square is complete, you can focus on the loops. Take the two short pieces and stitch the long edges together wrong side out. Then turn the fabric inside out and iron making sure the seam is neatly facing downwards. Fold the short side raw edges inwards and iron again to hold them in place. You will have two neat loops to stitch diagonally to two of the fabric square corners. Put one in place with the loop nicely copying the corner and machine stitch a nice rectangle. This will hold the loop nicely in place and also hem the loop short edges. Repeat with the second loop in the opposite corner (diagonal direction).
Then take the last two pieces of fabric measuring 75 x 5 cm and place them right sides facing each other. Stitch around the edges leaving one of the short sides open. Trim the corners to remove excess fabric and turn the strap inside out. Then iron the strap flat, turning the opened side in a bit to hem the edge. To attach the strap to the fabric pie carrier, pin each side of it to the other two square corners (diagonally). Again – stitch them on making a small rectangle to secure the strap nicely and to close one of the openings.
