Delicious bird treats!
The perfect DIY to do with your little one! Woke up this morning and thought how precious to hear the birds, sparrows and swallows flying around and the warmth finally coming through the windows. But the nature still looks pretty tired so inspired by gorgeous book by Emma Mitchell – Making winter, I remembered reading about delicious bird snacks on page 54. What a wonderful idea to pamper these souls and it’s a win win! Making or getting the snack – both get treated!
So what do we need?
- 3 tbl spoons of lard (lard is okay to use in cold temperatures but in warmer climate you may prefer suet)
- 1 tbl spoon of peanut butter (I used organic peanut paste with no added palm oil or salt)
- a cup of birds feed with variety of favourite grains
- a handful of oats (optional)
- 2 large apples
- string with large needle
Melt the lard and the peanut butter in a saucepan until liquid, add the birds feed mix and oats and put aside to cool for a bit. In the meantime cut two large apples in half and scoop out the middle to create four bowls. You can cut up the inside part and add it to the seed mix.
When the mix is becomes more solid, scoop it into the apple bowls and put into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Then take the apples out and use a large needle to put a string through each half. Hang your treats wherever they’re likely to attract birds!
