SPRING DIY – DENIM APRON
Spring DIY – Denim Apron
Inspiring ideas for upcycling old jeans
Upcycling jeans is fun and it is a great way to transform one useful piece into another – for example a DIY denim apron! If you enjoy repurposing old clothes and simple sewing projects you will love this idea! DIY denim apron project is ideal for makers – do you paint, make pottery or love taking care of plants? Then denim apron will be a beautiful piece for your creative studio!
How do you make a jean apron?
I have several old pieces of jeans put aside for crafts and DIYs. For the apron I chose two pairs of jeans to create a combination of two denim textures. I also chose two pairs made of soft denim to avoid breaking the needle on multiple layers. I saw an interesting DIY denim apron project done by Toni & Stephanie at Farb-Doktor and got inspired for the top strap. However, I decided to do the rest of the denim apron a little differently. Let’s have a look!

DIY Denim Apron Project
You’ll need:
- two pairs of old jeans
- 50 x 10 cm cotton/linen blend scrap fabric
- scissors
- seam ripper
- denim sewing thread
- denim sewing needle
- sewing machine
Instructions
Let’s separate the apron into two parts – the top and the bottom skirt. Begin by choosing the jeans for the apron top and cut the piece out as shown on the image. I chose a soft denim jeans with front and back pockets I liked. I didn’t worry about the measurements too much. After cutting the piece out I measured how I want the denim apron top to fit by placing it on myself. To add some extra width to the bottom of the piece I cut out two triangle pieces from the other pair of jeans (approx 30 x 10 cm).
Set up the machine to regular stitch, also using the denim needle and the denim thread. Sew the pieces together to create the top piece of the denim apron. I also addes a small vertical dart down the middle of the apron, approx. 5 cm long to make the top more fitted.
Then I focused on the apron skirt. Using the second pair of the jeans I cut four pieces out as shown on the images, removing the waistband using the seam ripper. Then I simple-stitched the pieces together on the machine.
Now I had the top piece and the bottom skirt of the denim apron. Using waistband from the first pair of jeans I created the top strap and stitched it to the top. Then I stitched the top and the bottom skirt together. Lastly, I created straps from the scrap fabric and attached them to the side of the skirt. And the apron was finished!
Enjoy!
Your DIY piece of art is ready! If you find it necessary for better fitting, add a couple more 5 cm darts to each side of the apron top. You can also decorate the apron by adding scrap fabric patches, embroidery or sashiko stitching!
