DIY Egg Planters
Bring the spring to your home
While making DIY egg planters I was standing by an open window and listening to the birds. It seems that the short grey winter days are finally over and the sun and warm breeze have arrived. About a month ago I began planning which herbs and veggies I’ll try to grow on the balcony this year. I bought some basil, thyme, oregano and watercress and I already had some dwarf tomatoes, garden peas and edible flowers from last year. Growing herbs indoors on a windowsill is a double win because you’ll have both the beauty of greens and flavour for your dishes at hand!
To add a little twist to this spring herb planting project, I decided to use egg shells and make a little Easter garden! This is a lovely project to just take your mind off of the everyday hassle and also makes a lovely educational craft for children.

Which herbs to plant?
Basil
I use basil frequently in the kitchen so this was an obvious option. Basil is amazing for use in salads, sauces, pasta dishes or a pesto. She will do well in indirect sunlight on a windowsill (away from a heater), watered regularly. In terms of nutriens, basil requires additional support so use organic and natural fertalizers every 2-3 weeks to keep her happy. Basil also has some healing properties and as a herb is known to be beneficial for digestion.
Oregano
Another wonderful herb that will add delicious flavour to your dishes! Similarly to the basil, fresh oregano is also a wonderful addition in recipes and is believed to have some healing properties, particularly for respiration. Oregano requires a lot of sunlight but compare to the basil doesn’t need such frequent watering or fertilizers.
Mint
Mint is a lovely herb to grow indoors. She does well in sunlight and is very easy to maintain. Mint is an excellent addition to savoury dishes, great for making marinades or warm teas soothing for digestion. She is also a great decoration as well as flavour for summer cocktail recipes.
Watercress
Watercress is particularly fun for planting with children! It grows easily on moist cotton wool or in egg planters, sprouting in two days already! In about a week you can simply cut the little bunches and add them to your meals. Watercress is full of vitamins and minerals, and is delicious in salads, soups or simply sprinkled on top of cottage cheese toast. Make sure that wherever you’re growing watercress (cotton wook, kitchen paper wipes or a bit of potting soil) it is always wet.
DIY Egg Planters
You’ll need:
- egg shells
- herb seeds – beautiful option are Mountain Valley Seeds or the Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds
- potting soil
- water
Instructions
Place dried egg shell halves onto the egg paper tray and add about two tea spoons of a potting soil. Then sprinkle the seeds into each egg shell and press them gently. When all the shells contain the herb seeds of your choice, sprinkle a bit more of the potting soil on top. This should not be more than 0.5cm so that the seeds can nicely sprout through.
Lastly, water each shell gently and you’re all set! Now place the little DIY egg planters on the windowsill, water the seeds regularly and watch the delicious spring greens come through!
You can use DIY egg shell planters for other floral projects too – Make a beautiful spring flower bouquet and use the eggs shell as a vase. You can also make little fields with small stones, moss or little succulents. Be creative, have fun!
